Lot 4549
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.77 g, 5 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 322. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. SARMAT-A DEVICTA / S✱AR Victory advancing right, holding trophy in her right hand and palm frond in her left, spurning captive seated to right. Cf. RIC 257 (for prototype). Minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation, copying RIC 257 (Arelate). The reverse is particularly charming, especially the rendering of the palm frond and the trophy.
